A 22-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for abusive sexual contact. U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte handed down the sentence to Jared Paul Dorian, Jr., on February 23, 2026. In addition to his prison term, Dorian will serve five years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Dorian was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2025 and pleaded guilty on November 20, 2025. The conviction relates to an incident that occurred in April 2024 on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation, where Dorian engaged in sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl.
The case was prosecuted under the Major Crimes Act, which requires certain violent crimes occurring in Indian country to be handled by federal courts rather than state courts.
“This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims. The investigation involved both the FBI and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case.
Following sentencing, Dorian was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
