South Dakota men’s basketball head coach Eric Peterson announced on Apr. 20 that Josh Townley-Thomas will join the team’s roster for the 2026-27 season. Townley-Thomas, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, transfers to South Dakota after three years at Creighton.
Townley-Thomas appeared in ten games during his sophomore year at Creighton and began the 2025-26 season with promise before a season-ending injury in the opener against South Dakota. In that game on November 5, he scored six points while shooting three-for-four in five minutes of play. His academic achievements include being named to the NABC Honors Court for the 2024-25 academic year and earning selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team twice. He redshirted his first year at Creighton during the 2023-24 season.
Before transferring to Creighton, Townley-Thomas played his freshman season at North Platte Community College, where he participated in twenty games and averaged 4.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over nearly seventeen minutes of action per contest. He totaled one hundred fifty rebounds—including fifty-six offensive boards—shot over fifty-two percent from the field, and recorded twenty-five blocked shots.
In high school, Townley-Thomas helped lead Creighton Prep Junior Jays to a state semifinals appearance in 2022.
The addition of Townley-Thomas brings further depth and experience to South Dakota’s roster as they look ahead to future seasons.
