A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to nearly two years in federal prison after being convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Donald Hoff, 34, to 22 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release. Hoff was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Hoff was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2025 for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and pleaded guilty on December 30, 2025. According to court records, Hoff possessed a Taurus 9mm pistol and about 27 grams of methamphetamine on March 21, 2025, in Sioux Falls. He was barred from having the firearm due to a previous felony conviction for possession of a stolen vehicle under South Dakota law.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted the case.

Following sentencing, Hoff was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
