19th Annual Indian Education Summit to be held in Rapid City

PIERRE, S.D. – The 2022 South Dakota Indian Education Summit will be held September 8-10, at the Ramkota Convention Center in Rapid City.

The theme of the 19th annual Summit is Okolakicize! Okolakiciyapi! Working together as one, for the betterment of all! This year’s summit will focus on creating networks, facilitating growth, and providing resources for sustaining cultural pedagogy in South Dakota.

Keynote Speakers include Ray Daw and Dr. Darryl Tonemah addressing mental health and trauma in our schools and communities. Breakout sessions will cover topics ranging from Lakota star knowledge to family engagement, cultivating STEM education to the masterful art of Oscar Howe.  Emcees for the event include Pat Bad Hand and Brian Brown. Rapid City’s own “Stampede” is the featured drum group.

The summit will kick off on Thursday, September 8, and continue into the weekend for a youth day on Saturday, September 10. Youth day is designed for K-12 students and will include storyboarding with Mark Mindt, author and artist of KODA the Warrior comic books. The youth day will also feature traditional games with Crow Creek Chairman Peter Lengkeek.
