Pierre, SD – Dicamba product registrants, in consultation with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) and South Dakota agriculture industry stakeholders, will request the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approve a state-level cutoff date for dicamba herbicide application for the 2023 growing season.

Currently, the dicamba application cutoff date in South Dakota is June 30. Under the proposed state-level restriction, the cutoff date would be moved to June 20. Factors considered in the development of the new cut-off date included planting dates and an analysis of historic dicamba related incidents.

“Dicamba products are an important tool our farmers need to protect their crops,” said DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts. “The proposed change allows for their continued use while minimizing the risk of damage caused by off target movement of dicamba products.”

Once the request is submitted, EPA’s review process is expected to take several weeks.

Affected products include Bayer CropScience’s Xtendimax plus VaporGrip Technology, BASF’s Engenia Herbicide, and Syngenta Crop Protection’s Tavium plus VaporGrip Technology.

As a reminder, pesticide dealers and applicators in South Dakota must be licensed and must follow product label instructions including application timing restrictions. For more information on DANR’s pesticide program visit:
