A man from Rapid City, South Dakota, has been acquitted of a federal firearm charge. United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that the jury found Randy Tail, also known as Randy Tayle and Randy Sierra, not guilty of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The trial concluded on June 25, 2025.
Tail, aged 44, was indicted by a federal grand jury in April 2025. The case stemmed from an incident where Tail was in the passenger seat of a vehicle stopped by law enforcement in Rapid City. During the stop, officers discovered a firearm inside Tail's backpack positioned between his feet. Due to a prior conviction for a crime punishable by more than one year in prison, Tail is legally barred from possessing firearms.
The investigation involved both the Rapid City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The U.S. Attorney's Office handled the prosecution.
