A man from Lower Brule, South Dakota, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for assaulting a federal officer. The sentencing of Thaddeus James Grant, 32, was announced by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell and took place on June 23, 2025, under U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte.
Grant will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term and has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case against Grant began when he was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2024. He pleaded guilty on March 27, 2025.
The incident occurred on September 20, 2024. Two law enforcement officers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) attempted to arrest Grant at the Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation based on a federal warrant. During the arrest attempt, Grant resisted by pulling his hands away from the officers and bringing one officer down with him to the ground. The officers eventually subdued him using pressure points.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services conducted the investigation into this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuting.
Following his sentencing, Grant was immediately placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
