United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that a Yankton, South Dakota man has been sentenced for distributing a controlled substance resulting in serious bodily injury. U.S. District Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Matthew Williams to 22 years in federal prison and four years of supervised release on July 7, 2025.

Williams, aged 33, was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2023 and pleaded guilty on April 2, 2025.

The conviction is related to an incident on March 17, 2022, when Williams distributed a pill containing fentanyl to a customer who overdosed after ingestion. Paramedics were called and administered Narcan, saving the victim's life.

The Sioux Falls Police Department investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. Ebert-Webb.

Williams has been remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
