United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell has announced the sentencing of Aloysius Mousseau, a 23-year-old from Martin, South Dakota. Mousseau was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler to four years and eight months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm. This will be followed by three years of supervised release, along with a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Mousseau was indicted in January 2025 and pleaded guilty on April 22, 2025. In November 2024, officers from the Rapid City Police Department found him with a pistol. At that time, he provided law enforcement with a false name and age. His prior convictions for crimes punishable by more than one year in prison make his possession of any firearm a felony offense.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The operation also seeks to protect communities from violent crime through collaboration between various law enforcement agencies.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives alongside the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder prosecuted the case.
Following his sentencing, Mousseau was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
