A Fort Thompson man has been sentenced in federal court for failing to register as a sex offender, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell. The sentencing took place on July 29, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Eric C. Shulte.
Stuart Dion, 41, received a sentence of time served through August 4, 2025—totaling 11 and a half months in custody—followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Dion was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2025 and pleaded guilty on July 14, 2025.
Dion is required under federal law to register as a sex offender due to a previous conviction for Sexual Abuse of a Minor. He has previously been convicted for failing to register as well. After his most recent release from prison, Dion registered an address in Fort Thompson on the Crow Creek Sioux Indian Reservation in March 2024. Authorities said that he moved from this address on April 11, 2024, and knowingly failed to update his registration as required by law.
“This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges.
