A South Dakota Lottery player has claimed the Lotto America jackpot prize from the Aug. 6 drawing, becoming the state’s first multi-state jackpot winner since 2018. The player selected the cash option and received a one-time payment of $1,822,001 after federal taxes were withheld from the $4,010,000 jackpot.
The winning ticket was purchased at Freedom Valu Center in Vermillion. As a result, the retailer will receive a $10,000 incentive for selling the winning ticket. This win is notable as it is South Dakota’s first Lotto America jackpot under the current game format that began in 2017.
According to lottery officials, excitement continues with Wednesday’s Powerball drawing offering a $526 million jackpot.
Revenue from lotto games like Lotto America is allocated between state funds: 70 percent goes to South Dakota’s General Fund, which supports K-12 schools, universities and technical institutes; while 30 percent is directed to the Capital Construction Fund. This fund assists programs such as the Water and Environment Fund, Ethanol Fuel Fund and State Highway Fund.
“The South Dakota Lottery reminds its players that it only takes one ticket to win. Please play responsibly.”
