A man from Mission, South Dakota, has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for possessing a stolen firearm. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on August 25, 2025.
Marlow Poor Thunder, age 30, received a sentence of three years and 11 months in federal prison. He will also serve three years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Poor Thunder was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2025 on charges of Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He pleaded guilty to Possession of a Stolen Firearm on July 28, 2025.
Court documents state that on October 24, 2024, Poor Thunder was stopped by a trooper with the South Dakota Highway Patrol while driving a stolen vehicle. At that time, he had a stolen firearm in his possession that he had taken earlier that day from another vehicle. Law enforcement officers located and seized the firearm.
The investigation involved several agencies: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the South Dakota Highway Patrol; the Yankton Police Department; and the Sioux Falls Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy Jehangiri prosecuted the case.
Poor Thunder was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
