Manderson man acquitted of involuntary manslaughter in federal trial

A federal jury in Rapid City, South Dakota, has found Matocika Poor Bear of Manderson not guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The verdict was delivered on August 28, 2025.

Poor Bear, age 20, had been indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2025. According to the indictment, he was accused of assaulting a man at a residence in Manderson on November 16, 2024. The victim suffered an injury and later died.

The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI. The U.S. Attorney's Office handled the prosecution.

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced the outcome.
