U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) addressed the Senate following the passage of a major Republican-backed bill that aims to extend tax relief for Americans, bolster national security, and promote economic growth.

In his remarks on the Senate floor, Thune reflected on the efforts leading up to the legislation. "Mr. President, it’s been a long road to get to today," he said. Thune noted that over a year ago, Republican senators and staff began planning for an opportunity to extend tax relief measures should they gain control in Congress.

"Mr. President, voters gave us the opportunity," Thune stated. He emphasized that since taking office in January, Republicans have focused on achieving this legislative goal.

Thune described the bill as one that will "permanently extend tax relief for hardworking Americans." He asserted that these measures would "spur economic growth – and more jobs and opportunities for American workers," while also contributing to rebuilding the military, securing borders, expanding domestic energy production, and reducing waste in federal programs.

"With this legislation, we are fulfilling the mandate we were entrusted with last November and setting our country – and the American people – up to be safer, stronger, and more prosperous," Thune said.

He acknowledged the extensive work by committee members, chairmen, staffers from various offices, as well as those who keep Senate operations running smoothly during extended sessions. "None of us would be where we are without our staffs," he remarked. Thune also expressed gratitude toward cloakroom staff, clerks, doorkeepers, Capitol Police, and pages who worked overtime during consideration of the bill.

"I am very, very grateful to all of you," he added.

Thune concluded by expressing hope that members and staff could rest after their efforts and looked ahead to further action: "And I look forward to the House taking up and passing this historic legislation and getting it to the president’s desk."
