The University of South Dakota (USD) announced on Apr. 16 that its students earned multiple awards at the National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions, competing against Augustana University and South Dakota State University.
The recognition highlights the achievements of USD’s vocal performance and music education students in both classical and musical theatre categories. These results reflect ongoing efforts to foster student excellence in music while providing opportunities for artistic growth and collaboration.
Award recipients included Cadie Logston, who took first place in Advanced Classical; Clara Norell, second place; and Yue Yao, third place. Brooke Hilding won first place in Senior Classical Treble as well as Upper College Musical Theatre Treble. Other notable winners were Michael Arriaza, Trayden Goodman, Max Bruguier, Kalli Suing, Josephine Chiarello, Taya Ritterbush, Broden Schulz, and Emma Breugem across various categories.
Josephine Chiarello and Taya Ritterbush are students of Daniel Lickteig, DMA. All other singers study under Tracelyn Gesteland, DMA. Collaborative pianists supporting the event included Jennifer Van Peursem and Nicole Santos from staff; Linda Conrad as guest pianist; and Anna Mestnik—a senior music education major from Prior Lake, Minnesota—as student pianist.
“We’re incredibly proud of all of the students who participated and represented themselves and USD so beautifully,” said Gesteland. “We’re thrilled that many were recognized with awards, but just as meaningful was the overall level of artistry and the chance to connect with colleagues and students from across the state for a wonderful day of singing.”
While this announcement centers on USD’s vocal accomplishments, the university’s Department of Sustainability & Environment also plays a significant role on campus by promoting cultural well-being through community engagement projects according to its official website. The department operates primarily out of the Akeley-Lawrence Science Center according to its official website within USD’s College of Arts & Sciences according to its official website. It encourages innovative thinking about environmental solutions according to its official website, offers unique undergraduate and graduate degrees in sustainability according to its official website, and extends influence through partnerships like those with the Missouri River Institute along regional waterways according to its official website.
Looking ahead, both academic departments continue their efforts toward student achievement—whether through competition or environmental leadership—highlighting USD’s diverse contributions across disciplines.
