The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) has announced the approval of nearly $19 million in low-interest loans for drinking water and wastewater projects across the state. The Board of Water and Natural Resources approved $18,884,900 in loans with $515,000 in principal forgiveness.
"I am pleased to announce this financial assistance is available," said DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts. "Safe and reliable drinking water and wastewater infrastructure help protect our environment and strengthen communities for our kids and grandkids."
Funding was allocated from DANR’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program. The city of Mitchell received a $16,815,900 loan to dredge Lake Mitchell, aimed at preventing algal blooms during the recreation season. Wagner was granted a $425,000 loan for sewer work related to Highway 46 reconstruction and an additional $1,400,000 loan with principal forgiveness for drinking water system improvements. Wolsey received a $244,000 loan to replace an outdated sanitary sewer line.
These programs are supported by the State of South Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through federal appropriations, loan repayments, and bonds.
The board's decision was made during its meeting in Pierre.
