U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) addressed the Senate regarding the recent agreement on the Israel-Gaza peace plan. Thune noted that the first phase of the plan, brokered by President Trump and his administration with regional allies and partners, has been agreed to.
"This will finally mean the release of all remaining hostages, living and dead, who have been held by Hamas since its October 7, 2023, attack," Thune said.
He emphasized the importance of both Israel and Hamas implementing the terms of the agreement quickly to end ongoing violence and move toward lasting peace in the region.
"It is vital that Israel and especially Hamas implement the terms of this agreement as quickly as possible, so that this can truly mark the beginning of an end to the bloodshed and – I hope – a lasting peace for this most war-torn of regions," Thune stated.
Thune also highlighted that lasting peace would require an end to threats against Israel from Gaza and called for Hamas to disarm and relinquish any role in governing the Gaza Strip.
"In addition to both sides adhering to all agreed-upon terms, true peace will also require that there is never again a threat to Israel emanating from Gaza," he said. "This means that Hamas must disarm and relinquish any role in governance of the Gaza strip."
He acknowledged ongoing efforts by President Trump and Secretary Rubio to pursue peace in the region.
"And I know the president and Secretary Rubio continue to work relentlessly to pursue peace and to make this a reality," Thune added.
Thune concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude for the agreement and offering prayers for those affected.
"Mr. President, I am grateful for this news. And my prayers today are for the successful release of all hostages, the success of this agreement, and the protection of all innocents in harm’s way."
