A recent poll released by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) reveals considerable bipartisan support among Americans for small businesses and the promotion of a 20% Small Business Tax Deduction. Over 80% of Americans emphasize the importance of federal support for small businesses, with a majority across party lines in agreement.

The survey highlights that 93% of respondents believe making the tax deduction permanent should be a Congressional priority. Almost all Americans (95%) express concern over the potential expiration of this deduction. NFIB's President, Brad Close, stresses the critical nature of the debate in Congress. "Americans recognize the immense value of the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction and are concerned about the devastating consequences should Congress fail to act," Close stated.

NFIB South Dakota State Director Jason Glodt shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of this deduction for the sustainability of local businesses. "Supporting the permanent extension of the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction is vital for our local small businesses to thrive," Glodt commented.

The poll's results indicate that 62% of respondents are in favor of retaining the deduction within the tax code. Moreover, 77% agree it levels the playing field for small businesses against larger corporations. The deduction, which originated from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, is scheduled to expire at the end of 2025 without new legislative measures.

The polling methodology involved an online survey sample of 2,000 American voters, commissioned by NFIB and facilitated by Seven Letter Insight, including an oversample of 500 small business owners. Conducted between March 21 and 25, 2025, the survey reports a margin of error of +/-2.0%.
